Kosciusko County contractor Dick Woods had a chilling experience last Wednesday. We hear he took an inadvertent dip in his pond on Ind. 25 southwest of Palestine. Apparently Woods wasn't trying to swim. He was trying to catch a few bluegills through the ice. His escapades lend a new meaning to the term "ice fishing." All's well that ends well, however, as Woods was unhurt (except for a good soaking and a bruised ego.)
Ruth E. Kaufman, 19, daughter of Orvin and Provi Kaufman, Rt. 1, North Webster, came within $4,134.79 of guessing the amount of deposits to be made at the Camelot Village Branch of the Counting House Bank north of Warsaw. The contest began at the time of the grand opening early in the year. Ruth's guess was $13,809,111.11 and the actual deposits were $13,813,245.90. Presenting Kaufman with the winning $1,000 gold bar savings certificate were Chris Schenkel, chairman of the board; and Fred Stephens, president of the Counting House Bank. More than 3,000 entries were received.
Frank Rarick, of Warsaw, state representative from Kosciusko County, was named by House Speaker W.O. Hughes as chairman of the house committee on railroads.
More than 150 fishermen from Warsaw and vicinity enjoyed fishing through the ice at Chapman Lake on Sunday. The lake was literally dotted with groups. Many autos were driven upon the ice. Hundreds of bass and many perch were caught.
