It was a little difficult for Mrs. Virgil "Lou" McCleary to be philosophical when the family's 18-pound holiday turkey was tackled by the neighborhood cats. The bird, washed and ready for some fancy processing, southern style, under the direction of Lou's mother, Mrs. Mae Tharp, Chicago, took up too much room in the refrigerator, so it was waiting temporarily in the freezing cold in a large pan on the back porch. The lid didn't fit securely, however, and the marauders did some nibbling on one side before they were discovered. Thoroughly trimmed and scrubbed again the turkey finally reached the table beautifully roasted although not photogenic enough for any holiday pictures before the guests passed their plates.
