    Winners of the county's fire prevention poster contest were announced at the January meeting of the County Firemen's Association.

First place was awarded to Devon Marsh, Etna Green. Runners-up were Shelly Shand, Mentone; Cole Hyden, Burket; and Ryan Smith, Mentone.

    Ribbon cutting ceremonies this week preceded the grand opening of Moore's Shoe Store on East Center Street, Warsaw. Sandy and Dick Moore are owners of the new shoe store.

January 29 1951

    Calvin Beck, trustee of Turkey Creek Township, and his wife are indeed proud parents today. Their two basketball coaching sons, Dick and Charlie, guided high school teams to the Kosciusko and Whitley County tournament.

Dick's Silver Lake Ramblers added the Kosciusko County basketball title to their 1950 county softball championship by defeating Beaver Dam in the final game at the local armory. Meanwhile, Charlie's South Whitley Bulldogs were winning the Whitley county crown, 66 to 43, over runner-up Washington Center, before a packed house at the South Whitley gym.

    If the fire siren does not sound Saturday or Sunday, a new record will be established for Warsaw, says Harold Shepler, secretary of the Warsaw firemen and a compiler of records. It has been many a year since we passed through a January without a fire alarm. Sometimes we have had three alarms in one day, due to overheated stoves. Snow on roofs has probably prevented fires this January.
