    H.G. "Gus" Sideris was presented the "Volunteer of the Year" award by Don Tosby, chairman of the board of directors for United Way. Sideris has volunteered for various community projects through United Way for more than 20 years. He had been a UW board member since 1974.

    A former South Whitley resident recently was awarded the Bullet Award given by Country Music Magazine. Janie Fricke was selected Female Vocalist of the Year in the January-February issue of the magazine.

    Wilbur "Dude" Tennant and Doug Hall, newest additions to the city police force, began their duties last night by working the 4 p.m. to midnight shift.

Tennant and Hall, both World War II veterans, were appointed to the police force several weeks ago by Mayor Mike Hodges and the board of works.

    Betty Brewer who is attending school at Chevy Chase School, Washington, D.C., has been elected by the students to the position of Editor in Chief of the school annual. This is a great honor for a freshman.
