    Air Force Airman 1st Class Chuck Smith has graduated from Phase 1 of the medical laboratory specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

Smith is the son of Thomas and Brenda Smith, South Whitley, and is a 1989 Whitko High School graduate.

    MENTONE - Five students named winners in the DAR American History Essay Contest will be honored at a meeting of Anthony Nigo chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution at Mentone.

Fifth-grade winners are Amy Teel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Teel, Mentone, and Troy Eaton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Eaton, Rochester; seventh grade winner, Angie Evans, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Evans, Mentone; and eighth-grade winners are Jennie Johnson and Erin Fitzpatrick. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Johnson, Etna Green, and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Fitzpatrick, Warsaw.

    Rita Hughes, 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hughes, of Winona Lake, is following closely in the musical footsteps of her father.

Rita writes music and is a talented pianist. Her most recent composition "I See the Lord" will be presented publicly for the first time Sunday. Members of the Warsaw High school choir will feature the number at their first of a series of mid-winter concerts.

February 3 1931

    According to Postmaster O.B. Kilmer, plans for the new Warsaw postoffice building, just secured by Congressman Andrew J. Hickey, indicate that this city will have a building of exceptional beauty in architecture.

Plans call for a building 69 by 74 feet, one story in height, including a large basement. Entrance to the postoffice will be on Lake Street. The estimated cost is $95,000.
