A surprise celebration was held at Mentone School in honor of custodian Chet Traver's 80th birthday. Principal Jon Parker presented Traver with a John Deere cap. Traver retired from Indiana Cities Water Co. in Jeffersonville in 1979. Before he had time to get settled in his retirement, he was contacted by the school and asked to accept a position as bus mechanic. He accepted the post Feb. 24, 1980, but said he would only work six months. On Oct. 26, 1990, he retired again. But he didn't stay away. He started working at Mentone School as a part-time custodian 17 days later and on Nov. 30, 1995, took a position as a full-time custodian.
