    County elementary school fire poster contest winners were chosen recently. Atwood firefighter Mike Blair congratulated first place winner, Dennis "Bubba" Weldey, Triton; second place winner, John Harding, Atwood; and third place winner, Phillip Reed, Triton.

    County Police Sgt. Cassius Alan "Al" Rovenstine, 35, of Atwood, today announced that he will seek the Republican nomination for the post of sheriff in the May 7 primary election.

Sgt. Rovenstine, a four-year member of the county police department, said his goal, if elected, is to provide efficient operation of the law enforcement agency rendering courteous service to the citizenry of the county.

February 17 1949

    Cecil Latta, senior halfback on Warsaw High School's football team last fall, has been named as the first Warsaw student ever to win a National Athletic Honor Scholarship Society award, principal James Riley announced today.

Latta, son of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Latta, North Detroit Street, was presented with a 14-karat gold emblem, signifying his membership in the society.

February 17 1924

    Oscar Groves, star forward of the championship Leesburg team, high point getter, who committed but six fouls in four games, was awarded the Warsaw Daily Times miniature gold basketball medal. Groves was selected because of displaying the best "mental attitude" of good sportsmanship and playing ability.
