    The 1-2 punch of Brenda Rose and Rhonda Dowd sparked the Akron 7th-grade girls basketball team to a 34-17 win over North Miami.

Rose scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Dowd netted 14 points with six caroms as Akron improved to 3-1.

    Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Alice) Frantz, Silver Lake, were named the "Outstanding Conservationists of the Year" at the annual Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District meeting at the Shrine Building in Warsaw. They are owners of a 255-acre farm which feature nature trails in southern Kosciusko County.

    Shirley Geirger, freshman at South Whitley High School was recently crowned the "Riley Queen." A project sponsored by the South Whitley High School Sunshine Society, the proceeds from the contest are contributed to the state Riley fund which is used to purchase equipment for the Riley Hospital, Indianapolis, and to establish a scholarship for a Sunshine member interested in "nurses" training. Other contestants were Nancy Zeigler, senior class representative, Norma Gilbert, junior, and Gloria Ruby, sophomore.

    North Webster and other schools in the country that did not convene two weeks ago are now in session six days a week to make up for lost time.
