    Army Reserve Private Staci L. Carpenter, daughter of Ronald L. and Phyllis J. Carpenter, Pierceton, has completed basic training at Fort Dix, N.J.

During the training, she received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid and Army history and traditions.

    Nine young ladies who are seniors at Whitko High School will compete for the Junior Miss title Friday in the school auditorium. Contestants are Sonya Reiff, Julia Roberts, Patti Wolfe, Charlotte Nicodemus, Gail Germann, Kim Wallace, Cheryl Christoffel, Janet Adams and Marlene Mishler.

    Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Ellis, of Route 5, Warsaw, reported that their son, Sgt. John Ellis, has written concerning the destructive typhoon which struck the island of Guam in the South Pacific recently. Sgt. Ellis was not injured, and in fact, his barracks was not damaged.

Sgt. Ellis states that as a result of the typhoon they have very little water and no electricity.

    The Times has received the following note from Will Brown, who, accompanied by Mrs. Brown, left for Florida a few days ago:

"Arrived at Jacksonville today. We got with Charles Wheeler and wife last Saturday and are touring the state together. We landed in Florida in eight days from Warsaw - pretty fair for old 'Liz,' don't you think? Very cold here for Florida, but we will soon be farther south. Received papers here O.K."
