December 31 1930

About 20 neighbors and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Merkle, intending to give them a good old fashioned belling and afterwards have an oyster supper. After making a commotion for some time they learned that they had been outwitted, as the Merkles had discovered their plans and quietly left home. When it was learned how they had been fooled the friends determined to be avenged, and returning the next evening took Frank for a ride. They passed through Warsaw and took the road towards Nappanee. About a mile from the town Merkle was let out of the car. He was wished good luck and the hope was expressed that it would not cost him much to return home. The boys had been home but a few minutes when they learned they had been followed by Mrs.Merkle and her mother Mrs. Crist. The women picked up Frank just a few minutes after he had got out of the other car. Evidently it will take real wit to outwit this couple.
