December 29 1996

    Heather Butts, Warsaw, daughter of James and Pamela Butts, recently was named district winner in the annual Lugar Essay Contest sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau and Bank One. Each year essays written by hoosier eighth-graders (one boy and one girl) are chosen from 20 finalists.

December 29 1981

    Marine Lance Cpl. David R. Brown, son of Martin J. and Marilyn A. Brown, Leesburg, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, Camp Pendelton, Calif.

A 1980 Graduate of Wawasee High School, Syracuse, he joined the Marine Corps in November 1980.

December 29 1956

    The local chief of police who was patiently taking a tongue lashing from a local "lady" for being so bold as to not exempt her from overtime parking. Chief Jay took it. He suddenly broke into a smile while examining her operator's license. He said, "Lady, this driver's license expired six moths ago - if you will take it down to the license bureau I'm sure they will be glad to renew it." The lady not only passed out the door, she just about passed out.


75 Years Ago

December 29 1931

    Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Estep, newly-married couple, were belled by a group of friends from Hastings. They surprised the Esteps with a tin-pan serenade. A delightful social evening was then enjoyed. There were about 50 persons in the group of fun-makers.
