    The Silver Lake Fire Department has selected Charles E. Slone as Fireman of the Year. He was honored for his 25 years of service as a fireman and 17 years as fire department secretary. Slone received a plaque and gold badge from Silver Lake Fire Chief Duane Sells.

    Brenton McDonald was recently notified that he has been selected for membership in the Americana Musical Ambassadors Band. This select concert band, composed of outstanding high school and university students, will tour several European countries July 30 to Aug. 20, 1974.

Brenton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack McDonald, Rt. 2, Silver Lake, and is a member of the Manchester High School Band directed by Terry McKee.

    Warsaw's rifle and pistol teams scored victories Wednesday night over the Mishawaka American Legion teams in matches at the local range. The fine shooting of Rupert Hill and Charles Betz helped the pistol team win, while Hill and Dale Shanbeck's marksmanship paced the rifle team.

    Lynn Nearpass, aged 13, son of H.L. Nearpass, formerly of Claypool, has won renown as the youngest public speaker of Youngstown, Ohio.

A few days ago his father, director of Youngstown Institute of Technology, was booked to speak before the Bessember Civic club. The father was so hoarse that he could not talk. The 13-year-old lad relieved him and talked for 30 minutes on "A Boy's View of the Philippines." The lad spent three years there with his parents.
