    WEST LAFAYETTE - A local woman was among the Purdue University students recently initiated into Alpha Zeta, a national honor society for students in agriculture.

Nicole Brandt, Warsaw, is a new member of the honorary fraternity. She is majoring in food processing engineering. She is the daughter of Will and Cheryl Brandt, Warsaw.

    Elson "Sam" Wilson, Syracuse, has been elected a vice president of the Indiana Festivals Association Inc., at the workshop and annual meeting Nov. 27. Wilson represents the North Webster Mermaid Festival.

The organization, which serves to improve and promote Hoosier festivals, has representatives from 11 Indiana communities serving on the board of directors.

    John Vance, Syracuse, is the ship's mailman on board the USS Wyandotte, an aircraft carrier. Following a Mediterranean cruise recently he visited Gibraltar, Crete, Greece, Casablanca and Naples. He is back at Norfolk, Va., now and hoping to be home soon for holiday leave.

    John Peterson, veteran of the 12th Indiana regiment, who enlisted at the age of 16 and saw four years of fighting in the Civil War, quietly celebrated his 81st birthday yesterday (Dec. 7) at his home on North Park Avenue.
