    Winona Lake's volunteer fire chief Dick Haines recently stepped down from the post, but not before making a first in the town's history. Haines was given the Fireman of the Year award for the second time - an honor that no one has reportedly been able to claim twice.

    A pair of divers from the Wawasee High School girls' swimming team are making preparations to compete at the state meet this weekend in Muncie.

Tracy Rinker and Nancy Amos were the only two Warriors to qualify for state competition at the sectional last weekend. Swimming in the Elkhart Central pool, Wawasee finished fifth in sectional competition.

    Mrs. Ronald E. Batten, daughter of Mrs. Arthur Thorn, Route 1, Warsaw, won runner-up honors in a queen contest recently when a San Diego, Calif., radio station recorded a show at the U.S. naval air station at San Diego. Her husband is an aviation ordnanceman, second class, at San Diego.

    Friends of Max Rapp, Warsaw musician, heard him over the radio from the Colorado theater in Denver at 9:07 o'clock last night.

Rapp was prominent in Warsaw and Winona music circles and left Warsaw for the West last summer.
