The Grasshoppers won the tournament championship in the Minor League division of the Warsaw Girls Softball League. Members of the championship team included Cherish Beam, Megan Burns, Kristina Clay, Krista Coppes, Angie Cox, Raven Downey, Ronnie Flores, Mandy Gibson, Hope Hart, Denise Hatch, Fayth Mauk, Jenna Rooney, Meredith Sensibaugh and Shanna Smith. Coach of the championship team was Denise Rounbehler, and Liz Pinnick was assistant coach.
Keeping the top beef award in the family, Trent Ayres succeeded his sister Tricia, who was last year's winner, as Grand Champion Steer. Trent, 10, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Ayres, Claypool.
Larry Shively, of the Little League champion Yankees, received the league's most valuable award trophy from Frank Sanders Jr., summer recreation director. Shively pitched a no-hitter against the White Sox last night and socked a home run as the Yankees clinched the league title.
NORTH MANCHESTER - Liegh B. Freed, teacher of science in the city schools, has in the last few months developed into a song writer of more than local fame. Last January while driving along the road a thought came to him that he believed worthy of song. Himself a singer of considerable ability, it was not difficult for him to turn the thought into poetry and then set it to music. Others followed, and today he has four songs to his credit that are receiving favorable attention. He has published all of these songs in sheet music form. they are "Sweetheart O'Mine," "You," "I'm Waiting for You" and "When You Are Near."
