    MENTONE - Jack Fisher is returning to Mentone to fill the position of principal at Mentone Elementary School.

Fisher served as Mentone's principal from 1977-83. He replaces Jon Parker, who is leaving to join the teaching staff at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

August 3 1981

    Brent Messmore and Darlene Hathaway were named 1981 Kosciusko County 4-H Fair King and Queen during the annual 4-H Fashion Revue at Warsaw Community High School.

Messmore is the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene (N. Jean) Messmore, Warsaw, and Hathaway is the 19-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry (Linda) Hathaway, Claypool.

    We are in the midst of Dog Days - that sultry part of summer when dogs are considered most liable to go mad. Scummy vegetation forms on lakes and ponds, and it was erroneously believed swimming dangerous at this time because waters might be poisonous. Ancients thought the conjunction of the rising of the sun with that of the Dog Star Sirius caused the sultry heat. Statistics show that more violent crimes occur in this interval - Dog Days.

August 3 1931

    No woman teacher who smokes will knowingly be employed as an instructor in the Warsaw city schools this coming year, a member of the Warsaw board of education admitted this morning.

While no vote or official record on the matter has been made by the board of education, this board member said that it was the consensus of opinion of the board members and city superintendent that no woman who smokes shall be employed.
