August 19 1994

    Ryan Martin, 15, a sophomore at Warsaw Community High School, was presented the 1994 Garber Award by the board of directors of the Warsaw Little League. Martin has been on four championship teams, one undefeated. He also was on the senior team that went to the state finals. He has played baseball for eight years in Warsaw. He is the son of Junior and Becky Martin, Warsaw.

    SYRACUSE - Police officer Jack Zimmerman will be leaving his post here soon.

Zimmerman has been accepted by the Indiana State Police to attend a recruit school beginning in September.

    Richard Williamson, of Pierceton, was selected as the master showman last night at the dairy showmanship program, a high-light of the county fair.

August 19 1929

    BURKET - It isn't often that this town can get on the map, or even in print, but it is in it right now as possessing the champion pole-vaulter of Northern Indiana.

Here's how: A few days ago Ed Gaskill had occasion to pass through a field traversed by a very wide ditch. It was too wide to jump, so Gaskill procured himself a pole nearby with which to vault the stream. At the highest point in the air as he was making the vault, the pole broke. Down went the performer and his uniform was puttinear spoiled. Nevertheless it puts Burket on the map.
