    Marine Lance Cpl. Gary Casper, son of Lawrence and Sharon Casper, North Manchester, recently participated in Fuji Fire Ex, a cold weather exercise held at Camp Fuji, Japan.

During the three-week training, Marines learn cold weather combat skills, including weapons operation, land navigation and combat skiing. They also lived in 10-man tents for five days in the field, and were instructed in proper wearing and maintenance of cold weather gear and how to prevent and treat cold weather injuries.

    A courtesy king and queen contest at Mentone Junior High School has raised $777.73 for the Mentone/Akron Special Olympics fund.

Teachers selected 22 participants and the youngsters campaigned for the crowns throughout the community in the penny-a-vote contest. Winners in the eighth grade were Jeff Boggs, who was top fund-raiser with $133, and Vicki Mattix. Seventh grade winners were Mike Jackson and Stephanie Nelson.

April 2 1953

    The pupils of the first grade of the Mentone School made an Easter scrapbook and presented it to Bobby Dale Smith, of the Harrison Center community, on his birthday. Bobby Dale was a member of the first grade until he had to withdraw from school due to illness. Each member contributed to the scrapbook by designing a page of the book.

    Al Cuffel, Warsaw, reports that two martins are already nesting in his front yard. He says this is the earliest the martins have arrived north in 20 years.
