 An accomplished folk artist, John Schoolman, 96, lives at Irish Lake, where he paints his canes, walking sticks, plant stands, hall trees, barn siding and on rocks. He uses wood that he picks up along the road, sketching the design and painting them. His work will be on display at the Lakeland Art Gallery, 116 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw, through Oct. 15. Schoolman grew up in Peru, Ind. and has many memories about the circus. Civil War letters from his mother's family collection are on display in the Peru Museum. He had a small community grocery store in Bippus for 37 years and is a veteran of World War II.

Warsaw's H. Dale Tucker was an Air Force pilot in the China-Burma-India Theatre during the early stages of World War II, piloting many B-17 missions “ over the hump”  when the Burma Road supply lines were cut by the invading Japanese troops. He recently received  his flying wings from the Chinese Air Force50 years later. The citation accompanying the wings was signed by the commander-in-chief, thanking him for his service to their country.

Milo Snyder, Cromwell, a retired Lt. Col., was presented a plaque by Maj. General Jesse McIntosh, Tipton, retired commander of the Indiana National Guard, and a letter by Maj. General Noble Slaughter, 38th division commander, in recognition of his 38 years of service performed. He was honored at a dinner in the American Legion home Saturday night, Aug. 21. The 18th annual Indiana National Guard Company L reunion was held Sunday at the Armory: Walt Wineland, Syracuse; Tom Eaton, North Webster; Max Curtis, Winona Lake; Rudolf Sierk, Milford. Former members came from out of state to attend the reunion: Joseph Rabena, Frank Ross, Aubra Johnson, Ed Lynch, William Marshall, Clifton Underwood, Edward Young and Leslie Rose.

 Warsaw's hard-hitting ace Style Shop softball team, captained by catcher Betty Bratt, has drawn capacity crowds at both local and out-of-town games for the past two summers. Wednesday night, July 17, the girls defeated Fort Wayne's Wayne Dale All-Stars, 9-8, in a game played here: Sally Morehart, Jean and Frances Cook, Mary Jane McKown, Martha Cummins, Helen Garber, Pat Albertson, Dolores Smith, Tamzen Phelps, Doris Wright, Marilyn Mowrey and Jeannine McKown, mascot. Mary Jane Miller is ace-third baseman and “ home run queen.”
