    MENTONE - David Barrett must have slept well Friday night. Manchester's senior running back carried the ball 38 times Friday against Valley tallying 294 yards, in leading his team to a whopping 54-28 victory over Tippecanoe Valley in the Three Rivers Conference opener for both teams.

    MENTONE - Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley opened the girls swimming season here with the Tigers taking home a 108-56 victory.

The highlight for Warsaw was a school-record diving performance by Tracy Long, who bettered her previous mark of 224 with a winning score of 245.9.

    Ellen Rasor, of Warsaw, fifth-grade teacher at the East Wayne School, Winona Lake, is a remarkable woman in the field of sports - she has just won her seventh Tippecanoe Lake Country Club women's golf championships.

Rasor, who is also an excellent angler and bowler, defeated Mrs. Robert Hartzog, of Goshen, 6-5 in the 36-hole finals on Labor Day.

    Gasoline prices at Standard Oil filling statins in Warsaw and Indiana advanced a half cent today. Red Crown gasoline now sells for 18-1/2 cents; Ethyl, 20-1/2 cents, and Stanolind, 17 cents.
