 North Manchester Fire Chief Dan Renz, Pleasant Township Fire Chief Kent Trickle and Chester Township Fire Chief Richard Runkel presented a plaque to David and Jane Grandstaff, of Grandstaff Rendering, in appreciation for the use of a home at their facility for fire and EMS training. An estimated 600 man hours have been spent training in the home since it was first available two years ago to departments from Wabash, Huntington, Kosciusko and Fulton counties.
Led by a third-place finish from Matt Campbell and a fifth-place effort from Baxter Burnworth, the Tigers won the seven-team 2005 Warsaw Invitational at Grace College's Miller Field. Cross country coach is Jim Mills.

 Layne Warren submitted his resignation as president of the Claypool Town Board at Thursday night's meeting, Aug. 23, having served since being elected in 1988.
 “Give a Hoot” is the theme for the new pre-school story hour series this fall at the Warsaw Community Public Library, registration beginning Aug. 27 until Sept. 8. Virginia Colburn, head of Youth Services, will present a half-hour program for two-year-olds each Wednesday. The three-year-olds will meet on Tuesdays or Thursdays with Margret Fritzel; four-year-olds will be meeting an hour earlier with Carole Withrow.
Ceremonial groundbreaking for the City-County Athletic Complex, Old Road 30W, west of R.R. Donnelley, took place Aug. 30. Play begins next summer.

Marine Sgt. Patrick Finton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Finton, Syracuse, has been awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered while on a mission in Viet Nam. He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1953 and entered basic training at San Diego, Calif. July 3. Finton is a former Times-Union junior merchant.
Mrs. Kenneth (Patricia) Shoemaker, Mentone, was sworn in as Harrison Township's Justice of the Peace by County Clerk T. Ethna Scott on Aug. 18. She takes the place of the late Clarence Eiler.
 Mayor Joe Johnson signs a proclamation stating that Friday, Aug. 20 is Mizpah Shrine Day in Warsaw. Brooks Pinnick is president of the Kosciusko County Shrine Club. Bruce Howe serves as parade marshal tonight.

David Kain, 11, son of The Times & Union's Mrs. Ruth Kain, North Indiana Street, worked feverishly, late, into the dawn, following a crack-up of his number 32 car hours before qualification. His racer upset when the “king” bolt struck a bump as he was pulled up a hill, Road  25, south of Union Street, the front axle torn from the chassis. Six hours later, he snapped the garage light off and went to bed.
