She has corresponded with troops in every U.S. war since thenWorld War II, Korea, Vietnam. Some have been family, others were friends and neighbors. Zula's youngest grandson, Brian Pyle, was so appreciative of his grandmother's weekly letters while he was stationed in Bosnia that he presented her with a Troop Support medal and lapel pin from the National Guard. She corresponds with Brian's wife, Shannon, who is serving with the National Guard stationed in Iraq. Between the world wars, she met and married W.E. “Ernest” Pyle, who asked her to marry him on their third date.
