    William "Bill" Metcalf, North Webster fire chief for more than 30 years and a volunteer fireman for more than 62 years, is the Kosciusko County "Fireman of the Year" for 1997. He was honored at the 52nd annual Kosciusko Fireman's Association fish fry at the county fairgrounds.

    The Society of Distinguished American High School Students has announced five students from First United Methodist Church have been selected as members for 1982.

Students awarded this honor include Todd Dickerson, Jeff Hopkins, Gay Shenefield, John Snyder and Ammie Drudge.

September 24 1957

    A Holstein-Fresian owned by Carl and Harold Gawthrop, father and son, of near Etna Green, has been awarded national honors and crowned "Queen" of the United States in milk and butterfat production for a junior 4-year-old cow milked twice daily.

The new record of 27,526 pounds of milk eclipsed the old mark of 26,733 set in 1948 by a California cow.

    In celebration of her ninth birthday, Betty Eyer, of near Clunette, entertained a party of friends. The afternoon saw spent playing games, and at 4 p.m. ice cream and angel-food cake were served. Those present were Esther and Helen Stookey, Ruth and Mary Alice McColley, Esther Bell and Lois Harmon, Helen Jean Symonds, Mary Ellen Plummer, Robert Plummer, Leonard Estep, Harold Eyer and the hostess, Betty Eyer.
