10 Years Ago Max Duncan, Milford, was named 2005 Kosciusko County Fireman of the Year at the Fireman's Association fish fry held at the Home and Family Arts Building at the fairgrounds Thursday night, Sept. 15. He joined the Milford Fire Department in 1968, two years after returning from service in the Marines. Recognized with the Service Award was Atwood Fire Chief Mike Harmon, who has served in many positions in his nearly 40 years with the Department. For the sixth year in a row, the Mentone Fire Department won the Attendance Award, with the most members at the county meetings throughout the year. She earned the scholarship from being a 1990 contestant in the Miss Kosciusko Scholarship Pageant, a preliminary pageant to the Miss Indiana Pageant. The Allman Scholarship is presented to contestants who choose a career in medicine. Warsaw police officers Doug Brumfield, Chuck Hodges and David Morales tied yellow ribbons to the antennas of their squad cars in an effort to raise awareness of American troops in the Middle East. Ribbons have been placed throughout the area, where they will remain until all our servicemen and women are safely back in the United States. 50 Years Ago Madison “Matty” Jones, Turkey Creek Township trustee from 1946 to 1950, has been honored as the Syracuse Fire Department's first honorary fireman. He was instrumental in organizing the fireman's association. After the disastrous Liberty Coach fire in 1947, he started a program to obtain the much-needed equipment. Robert Maish, of the Little Crow Milling Co., announced Aug. 31 the appointment of Robert Rearick as regional sales manager for the firm. Maish reported that the recent addition of new products to the company's line necessitated addition to the sales staff, permitting more concentrated efforts in the sales areas. 75 Years Ago Betty Lou Overmyer has more fun in that orange and black convertible “Jitterbug Express” that her father, Gerry, gave her. The car is usually packed to overflow with her schoolmates.
