    Brian Grossnickle, son of Steve and Lori Grossnickle, is spending his summer as a counselor at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, N.M. Ghost Ranch is run by Presbyterian Church as a year-round facility offering week-long classes in religion, literature and the arts. Grossnickle works with middle school-age children teaching ceramics, outdoor field studies and other activities at the ranch. In August, he will return for his senior year at DePauw University in Greencastle, where he is majoring in anthropology and ceramics.

    Winners in an end-of-school essay contest on "Why I Like Silver Lake" were announced at the recent Silver Lake Days Festival.

Winners are Janelle Sommers, kindergarten; Dayna Yoder and Judd Stover, first; Sussanna Metzger, second; Adrienne Shalley, third; Cara Metzger, fourth; Dan Metzger, fifth; Wendy Hoge, sixth; and Richard Cochran, fifth and sixth combined.

September 18 1959

    Three hundred and twenty-seven years! That's the combined ages of the Silver Lake area's oldest woman, man, and couple, honored during "Oldtimers Day" at the Silver Lake Centennial.

Mrs. Minerva Zimmerman, who reached her 103rd birthday last April was the oldest woman. The oldest man in the contest was Mark Yotter, 91, also, of Silver Lake, while the oldest couple were Mr. and Mrs. George Weiss, of Claypool. Mr. Weiss is 85, and his wife 78.

    Dean VanOsdol, son of Mrs. Eugene Alleman of this city, received word that he had passed an examination of the dental board of the state of Ohio. This will enable him, through a reciprocity agreement, to practice dentistry in 10 different states.
