10 Years Ago Statues of a fireman holding a small child and an adult and puppy Dalmatians were installed on cement pads in front of the Pierceton Fire Department station. Rex D. and Jeannette Mast, who used to own Mast Hardware, donated the statues. Rex was a longtime volunteer fireman. A dedication ceremony was held Sunday, September 11. Local artists donated original pieces of art for an auction benefiting United Way at the Village of Winona Friday, Sept. 16: Robert A. Hudson, John Eric Hawkins, Mary Pat Wallen, Nicole Moore, Jennifer Ortega, Candice Cooper, Terry Armstrong, Mike Kelly and Merna Eisenbraun. 25 Years Ago The third annual Bourbon Antique Tractor and Engine Show will be held this weekend, Sept. 8 and 9, on the Jim Bates Jr. farm, three miles south of Bourbon on Ind. 331. The show had been rescheduled because of flooding rains. Featured will be a 1920 Case steam engine owned by Dal Anglin, of Clunette, and a 1913 Case owned by Lyal Harman, providing power to run several grain separators. Club members have restored a 100-year-old sawmill and a 70-year-old circus wagon. A new feature this year is horse plowing. Ed Di Rico, of Winona Lake, has a 14-foot-tall cherry tomato plant. It was planted during the first part of June, and he believes nutrients from the lake helped it achieve its size. 50 Years Ago The Electrol, considered a top electrically operated projection screen, features a five-inch extruded aluminum roller with die cast end caps individually supported and mounted on precision self-aligning ball bearings and driven by a heavy-duty gear motor for quiet performance. The new model was announced Aug. 26 by C.J. Cerny, vice president of sales at the Da-Lite Screen Company. “Da-Lite pioneered these screens more than a quarter century ago, and the first one is still in operation.” The new pastor of the Mt. Tabor Church of God, Route 1, Etna Green, is Rev. Darrell Prichard. He has served the past nine years at First Church of God in Risingsun, Ohio. 75 Years Ago Robert Glenn Warren, of Wawasee, is listed as one of the Culver summer school cadets to receive military promotion. He has been made cub lance corporal. Al Gerard and his personnel are celebrating his Central Shoe Store's 15th anniversary as a Warsaw enterprise this week. Fifteen years ago this Thursday, July 25, Gerard purchased the store from Clinton Dederick and business partner, Allan Visk. The original store was opened by the late George Stout, who retired and sold his interest to Dederick, who was sole owner for many years. Present personnel are assistant manager Warren Rosbrugh, Richard Silveus and Ernest Kelly. By efficient management, the store has risen to be one of the finest of its kind in the state.
