10 Years Ago The Chinworth and Groninger bridges are being restored and will be part of the Lake City Greenway Trail that begins near Dewamac Park and the City-County Athletic Complex west of Warsaw on Old Road 30. The Chinworth Bridge, set across the Tippecanoe River, is 113 years old and is being preserved with new flooring and renovations to its structure. A group of His Majesty’s Puppeteers of Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church attended One Way Street Puppet Ministry Summerfest in Elkhart to learn new skills for their program. Liz Von Seggen is presenter and co-founder. 25 Years Ago The Warsaw Tigers football team came through with a convincing 27-0 victory over the Plymouth Rockies at Fisher Field in a Northern Lakes Conference contest. The Tigers gave the fans something to cheer about as the team put 15 points on the board in the opening quarter. Juniors Kermit Imler and Doug Light combined for 249 yards on 36 carries; Imler led the way with 125 yards on 16 rushed and Light added 114 yards on 20 attempts. Dedication of the new gazebo/bandstand and decorative lights at Syracuse Lakeside Park marks the completion of the first project in the five-year Syracuse Beautification Program. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a niece, Betty Appenzeller of Syracuse, unveiled the “Ken and Lela Harkless Gazebo” built by Dana Cone Construction, Syracuse. Future plans include improvements to Ward Park, Hoy’s Beach and Crosson Park, site of the Scout cabin. 50 Years Ago Warsaw Community Library construction is expected to get underway in September. Improvement will include renovation of the old library and construction of a two-story addition to the north of the present building. City firemen honored for their years of service are William G. “Pop” Walgamuth, 39 years; Leonard Wolford, 32; E.F. “Swede” Rydquist, 22; Charles Sainer, 13. All have retired. Three 4-H girls from the county are attending the Girls State Fair School for home economics leaders in Indianapolis. Chosen are Carol Tuttle, Pierceton; Susanne Long, North Webster; and Janice Lowman, Warsaw. 75 Years Ago Nick Unowicz took two nice bass from Center Lake on opening day of the fishing season after quitting work for the evening at the Warsaw Foundry where he is employed. One fish weighed 3-3/4 pounds, the second largest catch. The Centennial Theatre, in co-operation with several local merchants, is sponsoring a beauty contest to pick “Miss Warsaw” to represent the city at Michigan City Aug. 11-13. There she will compete with beauty queens of 35 other Indiana cities for the title of “Miss Indiana.”
