10 Years Ago The Lucy Locket Luncheon will be Aug. 9 in the Rodeheaver Auditorium. More than 50 rag dolls were made by the women of the Salvation Army Auxiliary to be used as centerpieces for the tables and as a gift for one person at each table. This is the third year for the project to raise money for the "School Worx" program that provides school clothing and shoes. The previous two luncheons have raised more than $2,000 for the program. A special attraction will be the children's style show provided by the sisters from "Just for Kids," Julie Hall and Jennifer Mink. Children of all ages and some mothers will model clothes from the store. 25 Years Ago Former Warsaw Community High School standout, and Mr. Basketball in 1985, Jeff Grose, has continued to earn honors as he was recently awarded the Waldo Fisher Memorial Scholarship award at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. Jeff will be entering his senior year and was one of two recipients of the award. The award is named after Waldo Fisher, who dedicated more than 50 years to the university as athlete, coach, professor and administrator. The award is based on dedication, integrity, discipline, honesty, academic achievement, athletic competition and loyalty to his school and the Wildcat program. He is the son of Frank and Diane Grose. 50 Years Ago Shriner Tom Anglin gives Soap Box Derby champ Dan Benson the checkered flag as he crosses the finish line in the championship race on Derby Hill, the 150-foot long trail on North Indiana Street, Warsaw. Dan,13, son of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Benson, Winona Lake, was the Class-A winner, making five trips down the trail, and Greg Arnett, son of Mr. & Mrs. Corbin Arnett, Route 2, Claypool, the Class-B victor. He manufactured his car from fiberglass and spent many hours sanding and shaping the material to perfection. He won a $500 savings bond and a trip to the 36th running of the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, Aug 3. Dan can put his trophy alongside those of his brothers: Dale, 1956; Jay, 1958; and Paul, 1961. 75 Years Ago Joe McCarenty and his DePauw University band will furnish music for dancing Saturday and Sunday nights at Pottawatomie Gardens, Tippecanoe Lake. The following Wednesday, Vic Val and his orchestra from Chicago will entertain. Reports from all committees having charge of the convention plans of the Indiana Industrial and Volunteer Fireman's Association to be held in Warsaw June 8 and 9 are expected to be made at the regular meeting tonight at the fire station. "A 100 percent attendance is desired," said Roy Hauth, secretary.
