Jerry Walther was the subject of a surprise retirement tribute recently at Silver Lake Elementary School, where Walther taught for 31 years, and coached for more than 20 years. According to his daughter, Kari Airgood, 201 former students and colleagues packed the school’s gym to salute Walther as a teacher, role model, surrogate father and friend. Students came from as far as Atlanta, Ga., and three people were there from Walther’s first class 31 years ago.

Four Warsaw area athletes took home gold medals in wrestling, swimming, and track events at the White River Park State Games here during the weekend. Warsaw Community High School athletes Dan Moon, Rory Callaghan and Michelle Berry were each successful in their various event.
Berry won the 13-14 female age track high jump event. She also won a gold medal for a 16.6 time in the 100 hurdles. Callaghan won two gold medals and one silver in the 11-12 boys age swimming division, and a silver in the 200 individual medley. Moon took home a gold medal in the advanced division of the wrestling competition.

Miss Sandra Sue Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Miller, Mentone, was among the students attending a two-week journalism institute held recently on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. Sandra is editor of the Mentone High School 1962 yearbook.
Dr. and Mrs. Byron Laird and daughter, of Jeffersonville, spent several days recently with his mother, Mrs. Alfred Laird, and Miss Mildred Laird in Bourbon. Dr. Laird is director of the I.U. Center at Jeffersonville.

With water bills for the Kosciusko County court house averaging approximately $100 a month, the board of county commissioners is considering the putting in of a deep well and a pump to supply the court house. The commissioners were in conference with experts on the cost of putting in the well and pump. With the drought, water bills all over the city have raised because of the large amount of water used in sprinkling gardens and lawns.
