10 Years Ago During a ceremony in the Warsaw Armory, Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, as adjutant general, the highest-ranking military official in the state, presented the Minuteman Award to Lt. Col. Jack Stump, Warsaw, of the Indiana Guard Reserve Aug. 25 for his support of the Army National Guard. Stump formed Enduring Freedom Supporters of Indiana in 2003, which forwarded more than 500 packages to the local unit (1st Battalion, 293rd Infantry, Co. A, company commander 2nd Lt. Andrew Weaver) during their deployment to Iraq. During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy. 25 Years Ago Flooding continued Monday, Aug. 20, from Friday and Saturday's downpours of more than four inches. Winona and Beaver Dam lakes were closed to all boating traffic Sunday. More rain is forecast for Tuesday; more lakes may be closed. Warsaw and Winona Lake officials have started preparing sandbags. Flood gates on Winona Lake were opened Saturday by Mayor Jeff Plank, public works chief Kim Leake, and police officer Doug Brumfield. The water level at Pike Lake is causing concern. Many Warsaw streets are under water. Heavy rain and the threat of a Lake Manitou Dam break forced the evacuation of Woodlawn Hospital and Waterhaven Apartments in Rochester. Workers cut two channels to divert lake water and ease pressure on the 150-yard stretch of dam and earthen levee. 50 Years Ago South Whitley High School won the Kosciusko County Conference summer league baseball title August 10 by nipping North Webster 3-2. The Bulldogs started the season slow but came on with seven straight wins to finish with an 8-5 record: Steve Walpole, Tom Leiter, Jim Metzger, Larry Waybright, Tim Davis, Mike Winger, Jack Hart, Roger Caudill, Ed Christner, Dewayne Kyler, Steve Bruns, Mark Kite, Larry Davis, Clark Dease, Kent Roberts and Stan Frantz. Coach Rex Athan is starting his initial season. Rozella Ford golfer Mary Alice Estep copped second place honors in a Rochester Invitational tourney and won herself a nice coffee pot. 75 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Gunter have returned from their wedding trip into the east, including Washington, D.C., and Niagara Falls, and are now in their home on Road 30 west. Mrs. Gunter was the former Ruth Templin, Mentone school teacher. The Continental Gypsy Ensemble appeared at the Winona tabernacle last night, July 9, and were acknowledged to be one of the finest programs ever heard on the chautauqua series. The troupe includes artists from Russia, Czechoslovakia, Italy, and old Poland. They closed the 1939 chautauqua season.
