10 Years Ago The newest old bridge in Kosciusko County was set in place over Maish Ditch near Dewamac Park along Old Road 30W. The pony truss bridge, built between 1915 and 1917, originally crossed the Peterson Ditch, CR 600S near Packerton Road. Tom Groninger purchased the bridge many years ago and stored it at his gravel pit until he donated it to the Lake City Greenway. Greater Warsaw Cooperative Pre-School announced that Becky Craig, Winona Lake, will begin teaching the 4-year-old afternoon class starting in September. 50 Years Ago Walter “Ducky” Long, 83, Pierceton’s Spanish American War veteran, is still active. He has a woodwork shop in his home, still drives his own car, has a cottage at Barbee’s Kuhn Lake and enjoys fishing. Long enlisted in the Army in 1897 at the age of 18 and was sent to the Phillipines, where he served with the 39th Infantry. “Ducky” is a former rural mail carrier and was the first commander of the American Legion post of Pierceton (Menzie-Reece). Three other Spanish-American War veterans in this area are Sinica Primley, Winona Lake; George Ward and George Loveday, both of Warsaw. 75 Years Ago Street car tracks on Center Street from Lake to the Big Four are being relaid preparatory to resurfacing the old 1903 brick pavement with asphalt. Eastbound traffic on U.S. 30 detoured over Market Street; westbound was routed over Main Street. Two young Warsawans, Norman Taylor and Dale Vollmer, enjoying a week’s vacation in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains, write that they are having a fine time and the weather is extremely pleasant and so are the people. Kate Schade and Estella Lynch hold the long distance bicycle record from Warsaw to Tippecanoe Lake and back again. Stanley Miller, North Webster, caught the limit of bass, which is six, in 45 minutes on Webster Lake.
