August 30 1997

    Heather Cumberland, 11, of Akron, won a blue ribbon for her at the Indiana State Fair for her demonstration on "Fruit Puffs." She received a score of 98 out of a possible 100.

She is a member of the Beaver Dam Better 4-H Club, and has been a member of 4-H for three years. She is the daughter of Greg and Jackie Cumberland.

    Larry Ummel of Syracuse won first place in the individual bass pro fishing contest held in LaCrosse, Wis.

Ummel's prize catch was weighed at 17 pounds, 2 ounces. He qualifies for the national contest on Oct. 12 at Lake Montgomery, Ala.

August 30 1957

    A Warsaw couple, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Lowery, of 910 E. Clark St., will start on an all-expense paid tour of Europe Sept. 24, which will last 16 days by airplane with the first stop at Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr. Lowery, co-owner of Lowery's Sewing Center, 109 W. Center St., won first prize in a nationwide sewing machine sales contest.

    Wilbur Smith left for Washington, D.C., where he will accompany his brother, Robert, to Warsaw. The latter, a son of Howard Smith, has just completed four years of service with the U.S. Marines.
