10 Years Ago Justin Embry and Bill Garver, both technicians at Sands Office Equipment, were recognized by Canon USA for their achievement in the ATSP Certification Program. Embry received a gold certification and Garver received silver. Dr. Scott Shipley has joined Dr. Michael Conley and staff under the new name Lakeside Family Dentistry, 935 N. Detroit St. Shipley graduated from Warsaw Community High School in 1982 and from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1990. He will start seeing patients Monday, Sept. 12. 25 Years Ago Lifetime resident Martha Gochenour is the 1990 Bourbon Summerfest parade marshal Aug. 18. Her parents, the Steinmans, were of German background. Their farm was next to the Jerusalem Church (now Albright United Methodist) at Cedar and 9B Roads. She and her three siblings went to the Johnson Corners school. Martha married Vernon Gochenour and they had six children. In the 50's she and Kate Reichert were the Bourbon School cooks, turning out more than 200 meals a day for three years. From there she went to work at a downtown diner run by Tubby Hibbets, and then on to the area's restaurant, Red Door, run by Noble Babcock. She was in her late 70's by then. 50 Years Ago Jay Snyder, South Whitley contractor, clears the way for a new park to be located between the light company and the fire station. The park will include badminton, shuffleboard, tennis and horseshoe courts, playground equipment, a picnic area and a boat ramp to the Eel River. Bruce Wright, executive vice president of Lake City Bank, announced Aug. 10 that contracts had been signed for construction of a branch bank at Winona Lake, to be in operation by mid-November. It faces Chestnut St. and will be accessible from King's Highway. Manager is George Heaton, Winona Lake, assistant cashier at Warsaw. 75 Years Ago Presidential candidate Wendell Lewis Willkie's mother, Henrietta Trish, was born to Lewis and Julia Trish, northwest corner of Center and Washington streets, Warsaw. After graduation from the Warsaw public schools, she became a teacher at the “Pittenger School,” two and one-half miles south of Warsaw, now known as the Walnut Creek community. Crumbling remains of the brick schoolhouse can be seen opposite Walnut Creek church. Pupils still living in the vicinity: James Hibschman, Herman Leighty, Ed Poulson, Eugene Pittenger, Samuel Schue and Willard DeBolt. She later was a teacher in the Milford schools, met Prof. Willkie, the principal; they married and moved to Elwood, Ind. during the natural gas boom of the 1880s.
