   Community members, dignitaries and Warsaw Community Schools staff members attended a reception recently to recognize former school superintendent Dr. Lee Harman. Harman, who resigned Aug. 1 as superintendent, also was the recipient of several local and state honors and awards recognizing his 36 years in education. Michelle Boxell, representing U.S. Rep. Tim Roemer, D-South Bend, presented a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to Dr. Harman.

   This recipe for Beefy Jalapeno Cornbread was submitted in the Spotlight International Recipe Contest. It was submitted by Lisa LeMasters, Winona Lake.
   Ingredients: 1 cup yellow cornmeal; 1 cup milk; 2 eggs; 3/4 tsp. salt; 1/2 tsp. soda; 1/2 cup bacon drippings; 1-17 oz. can creamed corn; 1-1/2 lb. ground beef; 1 large onion, chopped; 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese; 4 jalapeno peppers chopped. Combine first seven ingredients in medium mixing bowl and set aside. Brown ground beef with onion. Sprinkle bottom of 10-1/2 inch pie plate or cast iron skillet with 1 tbsp. cornmeal. Pour 1/2 batter in pie plate. Top with ground beef then cheese and peppers. Top with remaining batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.

    A crowd estimated at between 1,500 and 2,500 viewed a parade and saw Sue Parker, Silver Lake, crowned “Queen of Tomahawk days” at South Whitley Friday evening. The annual “Tomahawk Days” celebration is sponsored by the South Whitley Chamber of Commerce and business men. Runners-up in the queen contest were Linda Putman, of Columbia City, second; and Judy Pook, of South Whitley, third.

   Mrs. Minnie Jamison and son, Clifford, returned to Warsaw recently after enjoying a 10-day vacation in New York City, New Jersey, New Albany and many other places of interest in the east.
   Miss Mildred Wainwright returned to Warsaw recently after spending a week in New York with relatives.
