10 Years Ago A group of 40 Troop 715 Boy Scouts, parents and troop leaders recently took part in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to hike across the Grand Canyon. This strenuous trip has been made by fewer than 2,000 people out of the millions who visit the Grand Canyon each year. Among those making the hike were: Dr. K.T. and Neal Kishan; Scoutmaster Dick McCleary (his sixth hike through the canyon); Nathan Creighton; Ira Dale; and Ed, Tammy and Erik Enders.
25 Years Ago The Eel River Old German Baptist Church, built in 1881, has a new home. It's still located on the northeast corner of Packerton Road and CR 1200 South, but it's 15 feet farther west now. The church was moved so that a new concrete-block walkout basement could be built under it to better accommodate the 80-member congregation. The actual move took place recently, when a front-end loader pulled the church, which was on a hydraulic system of beams, into place.
50 Years Ago Phyllis Shively was crowned queen of Bourbon Flower Show by her predecessor, Patricia Severns. Phyllis' attendants were Linda Klingaman, Emily Wiedeman, Nancy Fanning and Kay Sponseller. Sponsored by various clubs of the area, the queen candidates took part in a parade and talent program.
75 Years Ago Six hundred persons attended the North Webster Lake Association homecoming recently at Yellow Banks Hotel. Two hundred and twenty were served at the banquet table, while the others enjoyed a trip around the lake on the "Dixie," and heard a concert by the Shrine band from Fort Wayne. Radio entertainer Ted Knox, Fort Wayne, gave a 45-minute program of impersonations.
