Michael Wienhorst, a 2005 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, signed his letter of intent to play basketball at Grace College. He was the leading scorer for the Tigers in his senior season, averaging 19 points and five rebounds per game, and was named The Times-Union Co-Area Player of the Year along with Wawasee's Austin Kaiser, who will also play at Grace. Coach Jim Kessler says he could use Wienhorst at both shooting guard and small forward. 25 Years Ago Lorene Spearman of Champs shows a wide variety of Back To School clothing. Warsaw football coach Ted Huber gets his squad ready. 50 Years Ago Mayor Joe Johnson extended a welcome Sunday night, July 11, to delegates at the first meeting of “The Festival of Missions” at the Billy Sunday Tabernacle, sponsored by World Vision, Inc., Dr. Bob Pierce, president. The 36-member Korean Orphan Choir is beginning its tour of 23 states and will sing at each evening service this week. Rev. Sheldon Duecker and Rev. Harold Ford, minister and associate, will speak at Worship-In-the-Round at the Wagon Wheel Playhouse Sunday, Aug. 1. Rik Lovelady, guitarist, and Duane Larson, bass, provide the music. The Methodist and Presbyterian churches of Warsaw sponsor this venture jointly through Sunday, Sept. 5. 75 Years Ago A new manufacturing plant on East Main Street in Mentone is being started by Harl E. Nottingham and his son, Clay, who live on a farm just east of the town. Mentone Metal Works, formerly the sheet metal shop of George Buchtel, will specialize in the manufacture of chicken feeders and drinkers. Marcine Nottingham, cousin, will handle the designing and technical side of the work. Five hoboes, who sought to do some panhandling in Warsaw, were ordered out of town Thursday by city police. For the past several months, police have been making the city a hornet's nest for tramps.
