10 Years Ago The 2003 Leesburg Little League individual award winners for the Leesburg Summer Recreational League are Justin Monroe, Most Improved Player; Jamie Doyle, Most Valuable Player; and Alex Smith, Mental Attitude Award. Matt Elvidge, son of Brian and Kathy Elvidge, and Frank Bumgardner, son of Jack and Henrietta Bumgardner, earned Schoolboy All-American honors at the USA Wrestling National Championships in Enid, Okla. Both live in the Claypool area. Elvidge finished fifth in Freestyle. Bumgardner placed sixth in Greco-Roman and sixth in Freestyle. They had qualified for the national competition by winning the Central Regional Tournament in Anderson. 25 Years Ago Sun Metal Products Inc., Warsaw, announced the appointment of Keith F. Hutcheon, Nottingham, England, to be the new director of engineering. Sun Metal President Robert Piecuch commented, “We are very happy to welcome a talented engineer like Keith to Sun Metal. His strong background in the bicycle industry will definitely be an asset to our company.” In 1982, Hutcheon founded Mistral Rims, a company which produced the rim line in England until 1984 when it was purchased by Sun. Prior to that, he worked in the bicycle industry as technical director and was involved with a variety of research projects at Nottingham University. Sun Metal specializes in the production of wire spoked wheels and alloy and steel rims which can be used in bicycles, wheelchairs, golf carts and lawn mowers. 50 Years Ago Don and Dick Lecount, Randy Harris and Tom Patterson were in the process of keeping cool when caught in the act of jumping off a bridge in Syracuse. The race area at Syracuse has been a swimming hole for youngsters for the past 100 years. The boys were just a few of those who crowded Kosciusko County waters Monday to escape the nearly 100-degree temperature. Karen Ringgenberg, 14, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Ringgenberg, Pierceton, frolics on the beach of Winona Lake, enjoying the sunshine and water during the hot summer days. Karen was the 1962 Kosciusko County Soap Box Derby Queen and has her eye cast toward a future of modeling. 75 Years Ago The first of 15 official sailing races to determine the season’s fleet champion will be held over Lake Wawasee’s course next Sunday. The season’s champion will be eligible for competition in the international snipe class races here Aug. 26, 27 and 28. Snipe class skippers include John Call, of Warsaw; Frank Levinson, of Indianapolis; and Dr. Truman Caylor, of Bluffton. Morris Hansen, inspector for the state board of health, stated that most of Warsaw’s eating houses, with very few changes, would rate grade A in the recently adopted system of grading restaurants and cafes.
