Verna Montel, Atwood, is celebrating her 100th birthday today (Aug. 17). She grew up in Illinois and until a year ago, she was still driving a car. Montel is a 40-year resident of Atwood, where she lives on her own and supports herself. Although Montel has no children, she has "lots of nieces and nephews," Esther Orcutt said. Montel was a telephone operator for 25 years and worked at a hospital during the war.

This is a recipe from the Spotlight Recipe contest for Pineapple-Cabbage Slaw.
4 cups shredded cabbage; 1 cup shredded carrots; 1/2  cup peanuts or walnuts; 1 can (8-1/4 oz.) crushed pineapple; 3 tbsp. mayonnaise; 1-1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce; 3/4 tsp. salt; 1/2 tsp. sugar. In a large bowl combine cabbage, carrots and nuts; set aside. Drain pineapple, reserving 2 tbsp. of the liquid. Add crushed pineapple to cabbage mixture. In a small bowl combine reserved pineapple liquid with remaining ingredients; mix well. Pour over cabbage mixture. Toss thoroughly. Yields eight servings. Mary Parr, Winona Lake

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rarick, of U.S. 30 West, had as guests this past week Lt. and Mrs. John Chilton and son, Johnny, who have just returned from Munich, Germany. Mrs. Chilton, a granddaughter of the Raricks, and her family are now on their way to Los Angeles to see her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walden Rarick, and to San Antonio, Texas, to see his mother. They will make their home in Houston, Texas.

Ed Heacock, well-known Warsaw cattle dealer, made The Times office employees the gift of a large watermelon recently. The melon, weighing 50 pounds, was purchased in Jackson County, Indiana, while Heacock and Floyd Kelly were on a cattle buying trip last week.
