Warsaw youngsters Tyler Johnson, 7, Craig Ronk, 5, Trey Johnson, 12, and Tyler Fitzpatrick, 6, learn the ropes of racing in the Kokomo Quarter Midget Club. Their dads, Dane Ronk, Robert Johnson Jr. and Joe Fitzpatrick, were race car drivers in their day. “Craig has won three times this year,” said his father.
Shari Hoopingarner has volunteered at Camp Alexander Mack, Milford, for 10 years. Her ministry is keeping the Becker Lodge clean and greeting the guests. For her love and dedication, she was awarded the 2005 Camp Volunteer of the Year award at the Church of the Brethren's Conference July 5.

The Orioles won the regular season Little League championship at Leesburg with an 8-2 record: Scott Snyder, Gary Vervate, Tyrell Patrick, David, Jason and Jeremy Stidams, Jason Miller, David and Steven Myers, Jeremiah Polk, Brian Smith, David Seng and Damien Richardson. Coaches: Daryl Brookins, Tim Myers and Steve Richardson.
Deb Paton, 17, daughter of George and Judy Paton, Leesburg, has been riding and showing horses since she was 9 years old. Her horse, Bay Bonita, qualified for the Half-Arabian Legion of Honor at the Hoosier Horse Classics held in Indianapolis. Deb won the 1989 Indiana State Fair equitation class and is showing her horse at the Kosciusko County Fair this week.

Harold W.H. Wellman turns the first shovel of dirt July 29 to open the newly acquired Syracuse-Wawasee Industrial Park located on the Syracuse-Webster Rd. Construction of a building in the park will begin immediately by the Rebco Construction Co., of Fort Wayne. Syracuse firms, Rinker Boat Co. and McClintic Products are scheduled to follow suit in August and September.

Captain Herschel V. Cook began his military career in 1906 with enlistment in the National Guard in Warsaw. When the unit went to the Mexican border, he served as first lieutenant in Company H, 3rd Indiana infantry. As commander of Battery F, 137th Field Artillery, with the 38th Division, in France in the World War, he served as captain. After demobilization, he commanded the local National Guard unit for 10 years. He died Saturday night, June 22, at the Soldiers' Home at Lafayette and will be buried with full military honors Tuesday afternoon at Oakwood Cemetery. He was an excellent soldier and intense patriot who held the respect of all.
