The Boys and Girls Club of Kosciusko County has hit the big time: it was featured – prominently – in a recent issue of USA Today in an article on the Travel page that described the “10 great places to plant a garden for all.” In Warsaw, the National Gardening Association recognized the 3,000-square foot community garden at the Kosciusko County fairgrounds, that provided an environment where club members grow flowers, herbs and vegetables, and develop horticultural and social skills. The article was illustrated by a full quarter-page photo of Chris Colt, 9, of Warsaw, pulling weeds in the garden.

A crew of local Scouts recently attended Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimarron, New Mexico. The local Scouts traveled to and from Philmont by bus and Amtrak. Scouts who attended Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimarron, New Mexico were: Allen Bylls, Brian Davidson; crew leader Darrin Kitson; crew advisor James Doyle, and Chris Dorgan. Also attending were: Phillip Anderson, Gary Wagley, Tony Doyle, Tom England and Brian Bibler.

Bob Whitlock, who has made his home at Dewart Lake every summer since 1953, recently put Kosciusko County on the map by placing fourth in the Midwest water ski jumping tournament at Springfield, Ill. Approximately 30 competed in the men’s jumping class representing 12 states with all participants having at least an expert’s rating or better.

75 Years Ago

Pursuing a speeder at a rate of 67 miles per hour, policeman Raymond Neff and Speeder Joseph C. Lille raced out East Center Street recently. After following the speeder as he wound in and out through traffic he was overhauled at the Barbecue Gardens, after more than a mile chase and brought back and booked in city court. Pleading that his mother who was a passenger in the car was about to give birth to a child, he was released.
