Manchester College alumni, active community members and nearly 40-year residents of North Manchester, Jim and Anne Garber, were recently selected as grand marshals for North Manchester’s FunFest parade, “Going the Distance.” The Garbers said they’ve really appreciated “the broad involvement of the community and causes that enhance the community.” Part of being the grand marshals this year includes recognizing the importance of volunteerism not only from them, but from others in the community.

This recipe is from the Spotlight Recipe Contest for MO’s Dip:

1 (8 oz.) cream cheese; 2 tbsp. milk; 1/2 cup sour cream; 2 tbsp. onion flakes; 1 (3 oz.) pkg. dried beef; 1/4 cup chives, chopped; 1/2 tsp. pepper; 1/2 tsp. garlic salt. Topping: 1/2 cup pecans, chopped; 2 tbsp. butter; 1/2 tsp. salt.

Mix cream cheese, sour cream, milk and beef. Blend in other ingredients and put into small casserole. Saute’ pecans in butter and salt. Spoon pecans over cheese mix. Bake 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Remove 1/2 hour before serving with crackers. Nancy L. Harris, Pierceton

A 880-pound Angus, named “Sir Cedric,” was named grand champion steer in 4-H livestock judging at the county fair. The animal belonged to 14-year-old Craig Langohr of Pierceton. Craig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Langohr, wasn’t sure whether he would sell Sir Cedric at the livestock auction or to take it to Lafayette for higher competition.

Approximately 5,000 persons were present at the Old Settlers’ all-day basket picnic at Beachwood Park, Hoffman Lake, according to William Person, owner of the park. In the afternoon the main speaker on the program was Congressman Charles A. Halleck, Indiana’s only Republican representative in congress. Congressman Halleck was introduced by State Representative Hobart Creighton, of Atwood, who presided.
