The National Society of High School Scholars announced that Warsaw Community High School student Mallory Deardorff, Warsaw, was selected for membership. The Society recognizes the top scholars in the nation. Second graders from Criss Corson's and Derek Pike's classes at Washington Elementary School were invited to give their EdCom presentation on Lewis and Clark at the museum in St. Louis May 28. 25 Years Ago Warsaw's Dr. Robert Fuson is chugging along in his 1912 American LaFrance fire engine. The 4,000-mile Great American Race began June 24 in Westchester, N.Y., and is expected to conclude July 6 at Disneyland in California. Early in the race, a fan blade cut open the radiator. As of Friday, he was in fourth place in Lincoln, Neb. Don Prater, Warsaw Speedway track chief for 14 seasons, and his crew, are fixing the grounds and stands, painting and repairing worn track facilities. Barring rain, the season opens Saturday, May 26. Prater was a driver at the Speedway for 15 years. She has chosen pink, white and silver are her colors with a white carnation and pink sweetheart rose as her flowers. “Faith, Hope, and Love” are watchwords throughout her term. 75 Years Ago A carrier pigeon paused at the Tippecanoe Boat Company grounds on Tippecanoe Lake Monday, and was fed by the Bruce Pierce family. It carried a band on each leg, thought to be 731 or 735. The bird would not allow itself to be handled, but approached within four feet. Refreshed, the carrier continued on its way. Warsaw High School's current stage production is “Miss Yankee Doodle.” Mary Moon plays the lead, Georgia Washington, and Junior Unowicz leads the male cast as clerk Hugh Remington. Speech instructor James A. Campbell directs. Harry K. Barrett, of Warsaw, has filed for enlistment in the U.S. Army. George Evans, also of Warsaw, has filed papers for enlistment in the U.S. Marines.
