10 Years Ago Members of the Historic Home Committee of Kosciusko County are planning a tour of four homes in Warsaw, a restored one-room schoolhouse, and two Claypool area farms. Proceeds will be used for the restoration of the Chinworth Bridge. The committee includes Jeanne Jones, Elnora Cox, Tim and Nancy Shoemaker, Maureen Hall, Caroline Fawley, Marge Warren, Jeanne Weirick, Dorothy Poor and Neal Carlson. 25 Years Ago Katie Westover is preparing for her first race and will be a participant in the Strawberry Festival Diaper Derby. This will be the second year for the Derby. The three races will be held on the courthouse lawn. “We had 40 participants last year and we expect to draw a large crowd again this year,” said Eugenia Fulkerson, chairperson for the event. She said the toughest thing about the event is keeping the crowd under control. “The spectators were highly entertained last year.” She says it is one of the best events she’s ever been involved with. “It’s just so unique.” 50 Years Ago Dale Butt has been appointed general chairman of the Father’s Day Flotilla to be held at Lake Wawasee June 14-16. The event has been held the past two years and has attracted thousands of people to Lake Wawasee to see decorated floats make a trip around the lake. A golf tournament will be held on Friday. The Flotilla ball will be held Saturday night. The parade of floats will start from the Johnson Bay area June 16. Robert Ruhl has been selected as parade marshal. All persons interested in entering floats are asked to contact Clem Lizer to register. 75 Years Ago Nearly 750 persons jammed Pierceton High School’s gymnasium when commencement exercises were held for a class of 39 graduates. After the graduates were seated and the invocation given by Rev. J. W. Gibson, the class was treated to a stirring address by Timothy Galvin. In his opening remarks, he quoted from an old autograph, “Life gives us moments and for these moments we give life,” and stated that he was having his greatest moment in coming back to the school from which he graduated 26 years ago. Music was furnished by the high school orchestra and glee club. Presentation of the class was made by Principal George Plew and diplomas were presented by County Superintendent Harry Lewallen.
