    Navy Ensign Joseph Slaughter, son of George and Anne Slaughter, Winona Lake, recently graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and was commissioned to his present rank in the U.S. Navy.

He is a 1995 graduate of Warsaw Community High School.

July 25 1984

    There was a surprise visitor to the home owned by Valerie Eppenbaugh on the west side of Pike Lake. Ms. Eppenbaugh was in the kitchen speaking on the telephone with her mother, when a tree came crashing down on the roof at approximately 6:20 p.m. Although a large limb crashed through her kitchen ceiling, she was not hurt. "It scared me to death," she said. Ms. Eppenbaugh said she believes lightning struck the tree, causing it to topple as a thunderstorm rumbled through the area.

July 25 1959

    Pvt. Glee E. Bratt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Bratt, Leesburg, has completed eight weeks of advanced individual armor training at Fort Knox, Ky. A 1955 graduate of Warsaw High School, Glee entered the army last January.

    Florence Long, teacher at Earlham College, and Lena Long, teacher in the Fort Wayne schools, came home recently to spend the summer months. They are both from Pierceton.
