George Nye: "The street department was engaged last week in repairing a hole at the southeast corner of the public square where the pavement had caved in. This is an old fire cistern such as was used prior to 1884 in Warsaw. In 1883 the northeast corner of Center and Buffalo streets was the scene of the big Wright House fire. The old pumper and cisterns were not adequate and firemen telegraphed Fort Wayne for assistance, which sent equipment on the railroad in 30 minutes. Their pumper pumped water from Center Lake. The city was inspired to build the plant at the foot of Buffalo Street and put in water mains and fire plugs. To prove to city councilmen the system adequate to most situations, they threw four streams of water over the courthouse at one time."
