10 Years Ago With the change in uniforms for Kosciusko County Jail inmates to a traditional black-and-white striped outfit, people in police custody are more recognizable. But for one local politician, the ol’ stripes proved a hindrance. State Rep. David Wolkins of Winona Lake made the mistake of donning a striped shirt while mowing his lawn recently. A concerned citizen called the jail and reported that an escaped inmate was driving a tractor in Winona Lake and not one, not two, but three squad cars were dispatched to apprehend the would-be bad guy. Chances are Wolkins wil be wearing solid colors in the yard from here on out. 25 Years Ago Janet Studebaker and Kirk Dombek, Pierceton, and Billy Lehman, Claypool, recently attended the 32nd annual Oliver Lake Conservation camp in LaGrange County. They were recipients of scholarships given each year by the Kosciusko Soil and Water Conservation District Board to 4-H Achievement Award recipients. 50 Years Ago Kosciusko County’s Jim McCleary, who played on freshman team (golf) at Purdue this last year, is helping Don Dustin at the Rozella Ford Golf Course this summer. Jim shot low score on the Rozella course last year and hopes to nail down a spot on Purdue’s varsity squad this coming season. 75 Years Ago Mrs. C.I. Curtis and her two children of Indianapolis today were credited with the record for prize catches in Wawasee Lake for the present season. Mrs. Curtis drew from the water $130 in currency after she had found several other bills floating on the surface of the lake near her canoe. Most of the money was enclosed in a billfold, which bore the name of Claude Coppes of Nappanee, a well-known manufacturer. The catch was returned to Coppes. The billfold recently had fallen from his pocket while he was fishing on the lake.
