10 Years Ago It's obviously a love affair, one fostered by sparkling water, the squeals of splashing children and the comforting sense of history. Jane Gordon Cook and Paula Heckman have authored ÒWinona Lake SummersÓ, a delightful book about Winona Lake and the characters it nurtured and inspired. 25 Years Ago Bill Overton and Karen DeVries had to be fast to escape the heat in downtown Warsaw Saturday afternoon. While the mercury soared above the 90 mark, Overton and DeVries beat the heat by beating the fields in the annual Pioneer days Road Race. Overton was first across the line in a time of 9:42.1, while DeVries led a field of 19 women in a time of 11:58.4. The two-mile road course was not altered despite the temperatures, but runners got cooled off at several points with the help of families providing water hoses, sprinklers and water stops.
