July 20 10 Years Ago Derek Knapp, son of Melissa and Jack Knapp, Akron, and a fifth-grade student in Julia Teel’s class at Akron Elementary School, is the Fulton County winner of the 2003 David Deuter Memorial Fifth-Grade Essay Contest sponsored by the Indiana Troopers Association Inc. In an essay of approximately 100 words, Derek wrote on the topic, “What Being a Good Citizen Means to Me.” Derek received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond and an engraved plaque from the ITA. Officer Brent Ingram presented a certificate of recognition to Derek at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis June 13. 25 Years Ago Kosciusko County has been declared a disaster area because of extreme dry weather. The Midwest has seen little significant rainfall since April; 24 Indiana counties have been declared disaster areas; 87 of the state’s 92 counties have applied for assistance to the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Crops, if they emerge at all, are growing slower. Farmers are running out of grazing areas for their livestock. Hay production is down 50 percent. Tim Alcorn, ASCS program assistant in Kosciusko County, helps Lee Beer, Rt. 2, Milford, sign up for drought assistance. 50 Years Ago Don Chilcote, 1622 E. Center St., Warsaw, was elected president of the Warsaw Lions Club. Officers include: Warren Hygema, first vice president; James Kees, second vice president; Glen Longenecker, third vice president; Everett Hartman, secretary; Wendell Gusler, treasurer; Ardel Hanna, tall twister; Robert Nichols, lion tamer. Directors are C. C. Shira, Paul Lichtenberger, Ed Sauer, Homer Gooch and Neal Carlson. Officers were installed June 25 and will serve from July 1, 1963, through June 30, 1964. 75 Years Ago County Agent Joe Clark and Miss Esther Kelley, Kosciusko County 4-H club leader, announced activities for the club's camp, which will be held at Lake Waubee from July 17 to 21. The camp is open to 4-H club members residing in Kosciusko, Lagrange and Elkhart counties. The camp fee is $3.50. Miss Helen Jones, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Jones, is valedictorian of the 1938 senior class of Pierceton High School. She was editor of the school paper and member of the band. Timothy Galvin, prominent Hammond, Ind., attorney and former Pierceton boy, will deliver the commencement address.
