Eddie Hatfield of Hatfield Electric Co. volunteers his services on the county fairgrounds every year, making sure the electricity gets to where its supposed to go. For his untiring work he was presented a lifetime pass to the fair during opening ceremonies this week. Ironically, he has terrible trouble with portable power. Every day at 5 p.m. the battery in his walkie talkie runs down. He can hear people talking over the unit but cannot respond. He works over the equipment overnight and by 8 a.m. it miraculously returns to full power.

Fire, which threatened the entire town of Silver Lake at 3:30 Wednesday morning, destroyed a barn, a machine shop and a hen house with 100 hens and a Ford V-8 auto belonging to C.M. Wedrick with a loss of around $3,000 covered in small part by insurance. The barn contained a quantity of feed. This and machinery in the shop was destroyed. The barn was a 30x40 foot building, the machine shop was about the same dimensions. The hennery was about 16x30. All were new buildings in excellent condition. The auto parked in the barn is believed possibly to have started the blaze.
