10 Years Ago People usually travel to the island of St. Lucia to vacation at one of their resorts. Bruce Grossnickle, M.D., his son David, a pre-med student at DePauw University, and Cheryl Wright, a patient assessment team leader for Grossnickle Eye Center, went to the island June 23 through 30 for missionary work. Bruce is an ophthalmologist and medical director for Grossnickle Eye Center.
"We saw about 30 patients a day for five days," said Bruce. "We took care of whatever we could. They have a really high incidence of glaucoma throughout the Caribbean, certainly St. Lucia."
25 Years Ago Among the entries in the Leesburg Lakes Festival Parade Saturday were horse-drawn carriages and a tuxedo-outfitted stork. In the carriages were Gerald and Gloria Dausman, Leesburg, followed by their son, Dennis Dausman. In the parade judging for the "Gateway to the Lakes" theme, an entry by Tippy Boat Co. Gray Rinkerbuilt Boat won the "Sharpest Boat Entry" by a dealer; The Beach Daisies entry by the Daisy Scout Troop won the best theme prize, and a 1928 Sea Eagle owned by David Swihart was the individual boat entry winner.
50 Years Ago A long-cherished dream of Miss Judy Schutz will begin to come true July 24. That's the day she steps aboard the liner Berlin, bound for Germany and a year of study at Marburg University. Judy is the 20-year-old daughter of Mrs. J. Raymond Schutz, Warsaw who teaches at Jefferson School. Judy, a 1958 graduate of Warsaw High School, was active in the choir and secretary of her class for three years. She has completed two years of work at Manchester College where she was feature editor of Oak Leaves, the weekly newspaper.
75 Years Ago Works Progress Administration announces that work on the new town hall of Leesburg was scheduled to start on Monday, July 13, employing 30 men for a period of five months. The old telephone building there has been torn down for some months past awaiting the approval of the project by federal officials. The new building, 42x60, one and one-half stories, with sub-basement built of cement, upper part of frame faced with brick, will provide space for a fire station, two public restrooms, heating plant and office in the basement. The top story will be a meeting room.
